Rwanda appoints Stephen Constantine as new head coach

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has confirmed the appointment of Stephen Constantine as the new head coach of the Rwanda national football team and the Rwanda U-23 national side.

‎In a statement released on Thursday, the federation said Constantine will take charge on a two-year renewable contract, marking his return for a second spell with the Amavubi.

‎ “The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) is pleased to officially announce the confirmation and appointment of Stephen Constantine as the Head Coach of the Rwanda Senior Men National Football Team (Amavubi) and the Rwanda U-23 National Team on a two-year renewable contract,” the statement reads.

‎FERWAFA said the appointment is part of Rwanda’s broader ambition to strengthen its football structures and remain competitive on the continental and global stage.

‎ “His appointment reflects Rwanda's continued commitment to strengthening football structures and achieving excellence on the continental and global stage.”

‎According to the federation, Constantine will officially assume his duties on Monday, March 16, and will immediately begin preparations with the national team ahead of the upcoming FIFA Series tournament scheduled to take place later this month in Kigali.

“Coach Constantine will assume the Amavubi coaching role on Monday, March 16, 2026, and will work with the existing team to prepare the upcoming FIFA Series Tournament due later this month in Kigali City," the statement reads.

‎The federation further said details about the appointment, including the coach’s technical plans and strategic roadmap for the national team, will be unveiled during a press conference expected next week.

‎Constantine replaces Adel Amrouche, who had been appointed head coach in March 2025 after taking over from German tactician Torsten Spittler.

‎The 63-year-old Englishman returns with a clear mandate to guide Rwanda to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

‎Constantine previously managed Rwanda between May 2014 and January 2015 and most recently served as head coach of the Pakistan national football team from 2023 to 2025.
